As a multidisciplinary artist, Simmons seamlessly navigates art and identity between mediums: ink, pastel, gouache, bookmaking. His paintings and artist books form a visual syntax—a harmonious arrangement of elements—expressing an interior world often challenging to convey in natural language.

What emerges is not a linear narrative, but an expression of his inner thoughts and emotions, shaped by life experiences rooted in the Black experience. Simmons filters them through both intimacy and critique—tied to resilience, endurance, and survival—yet never sentimental.
